The Camellia is an excellent choice as a base of operations in Kunming. The travel office is efficient, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are a good value. They also had a very nice shuttle service which made our arrival very seamless (we were able to avoid the predatory cab drivers who seized upon us at the airport). My only significant complaint is noise level -- the doors are poorly designed in such a way so that they must be SLAMMED to close. Camellia is a popular hotel, so during peak evening hours the doors are slamming constantly, which made things difficult for a light sleeper such as me. If you're awakened easily, bring earplugs (if you think you can buy them in Kunming, good luck!) or request a fan for some nice white noise.
