the building is old, but functional. the lock on my room door seemed rather weak. the thing on my bed was a poor excuse for a mattress. not much hanging out in common areas. as far as the walk up queen street keeping one fit, the hill isn't that steep. however, i received a decent rate on a single room, and for that i am thankful.

Location is excellent, very central to the city and for bus services. Nice having a bar and restaurant on the premises. Very quiet, very little traffic noise. Staff helpful and friendly.

Good value hostel/hotel at the top of Queens st. The walk up the hill kept us fit after all those breakfasts and lunches down the street at Pete's Cafe - you need to go there: great food at great value! Walk down to the harbour in 25 mins and across to Auckland Domain and Museum 20 mins. Travel Centre offers exceptional advice and help, we got a good deal on a camper van from here. Thanks Phillipa :)

Nicest place I've stayed in in Auckland, and while it's not dead centre downtown, it's close enough and the difference in quality from the more central hostels makes up for the little trek. Nice staff, quiet hostel - no big party scene but you can find that just a little ways down the road.
