Ear Cleaners?

For the next edition of our travels....

Yesterday we went to the "New Delhi" section of town. It looks like they're trying to make it look like a fancy western city with all the expensive stores and the McDonald's that we're embarrassed to say we had to venture into.

They had a guard at the door. I guess this is to make sure that nobody of a lower caste comes in. The meat was very mysterious looking and I told Cees that it couldn't be cow because that not allowed in India. So what could it be? Dog? NO. We asked someone and they said that the Big Mac was made of chicken!!

We asked a very western looking Indian girl where a good place would be to get a cup of coffee and she directed us to "The" coffee place of New Delhi called "100 People Cafe".

The place also had a guard and it was filled with very well dressed Indians. There was a WIDE variety of western music playing ranging from The Gypsy kings, Techno, western music etc. But the place resembled a Denny's or (for all you Dutch people) an Etos with a cafe in it.

After we had a cup of coffee, and it looked like we weren't going to drink or eat anything more (we were playing backgammon), they politely asked us to leave. There was a line of people waiting to sit in a place that could only seat 25 people even though it was called the "100 People Cafe".

We went to a deserted looking park to sit down and relax but before we knew it there were all these guys (7 to be exact) surrounding us asking where we were from and if we wanted to read these letters from "friends" in Holland/U.S. Of course I read the letters and they all said (in every language you can imagine Japanese/Dutch/Finnish etc) that: "Daynha was they best ear cleaner they have ever had they strongly recommend that everyone should get their ears cleaned by him" etc.

I was thinking of trying it until he brought out this 6 inch metal rod. If you can imagine!!! I told him No, No, NO!!!!

Cees was also getting accosted by other ear cleaners and shoe fixers and masseurs. But he was way more irritated by the whole thing than I was and kept saying: "No, we just want to sit here peacefully and we don't want any of your services. I'm sorry, no I don't want my ears cleaned!!!!"

I eventually let someone clean my shoes (against Cees's wishes) but I have to say he did a very good job and even fixed the soles that were falling off.

After that they still sat there and stared at us for a half hour until we finally left to go to this underground shopping mall which kind of reminded me of a N.Y.C. subway station.
The place was HUGE, about 2 km wide with all these different hallways and miniature streets packed with millions of stores (and millions of people). But, all of it more or less consisted of a variety of 5 different types of store: electronic/tech store, perfume/shampoo store, tape/record store, leather coat store, Sari store, childrens' toy store and candy store (with Twix / Snickers/ Kit Kat costing half of what our hotel cost a night).

After the electricity went off we decided to leave because can you imagine what it would be like to be in a N.Y.C. subway terminal at rush hour with the electricity going off?

We eventually started heading back to the sanctuary of our hotel and luckily a nice Indian man said he was going in that direction as well so we walked with him. When we got to a part in the road next to the New Delhi Train station where we couldn't pass the man said "no worries!!" and he proceeded to walk ONTO the train tracks cutting through the trains!! New Delhi Central Train Station is probably the biggest in India if not the WORLD and here we were walking through the trains etc. Can you imagine doing that at Central Station at rush hour? Needless to say we made it back alive, avoiding all the rickshaws and cars because there are no street lights to speak of.
