Around the world New Year’s Eve is marked with celebrations of all kinds to countdown to January 1st. Both capital cities and small villages play host to people enjoying the festivities and looking forward to the year ahead. Some cities go all out for their New Years Eve celebrations with events such as Hogmanay or gatherings in Times Square. Here at Hostels.com we have put together some of our favourite spots to count in the New Year and have even included some great accommodation to go with them! New Year’s Eve in Edinburgh, Scotland
Hogmanay in Edinburgh is probably one of the most famous and popular places to ring in the New Year. This New Year’s festival can last for up to five days with lots of great concerts, festivities and celebrations each day and night around Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle. The Hogmanay ‘Torchlight Procession’ takes place on December 29th, while the street party to ring in the New Year surprisingly enough takes place on December 31st! This Hogmanay street party promises to ring in the New Year in style with lots of performers and entertainers. Edinburgh really is a great choice when it comes to deciding where to ring in New Year’s Eve with a bang!
New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The people of Rio de Janeiro take their New Year’s Eve celebrations very seriously and it is one of the biggest parties of the year. Revellers from all over the world flock to Rio every December 31st to ring in the New Year in the ultimate carnival atmosphere. The main festivities take place around Copacabana Beach and see up to two million people in attendance every year. Stages are set up all along the beach with live music and entertainment kicking off around 8pm. There’s then a fireworks festival at midnight that lasts for around 20 minutes and is really breathtaking. New Year’s Eve in Rome, Italy
New Year’s Eve in Rome involves the gathering of crowds in the city’s Piazza del Popolo. People from all over Italy and worldwide gather here to celebrate the dawn of a new year with an abundance of festivities. There is music of all kinds from classical to rock with lots of dancing and fireworks to really bring the New Year in with a bang! Italians really love to celebrate New Year’s Eve and have many traditions to accompany the day and night. December 31st is also referred to as La Festa di San Silvestro – a festival for friends and family to celebrate with lots of good food and drinks. And don’t expect to get into that hostel bed too early as the celebrations in Rome on New Year’s Eve tend to go on straight through the night!
New Year’s Eve in Berlin, Germany
Berlin likes to throw a party and they really come into their party form on December 31st for their New Years celebrations. The Brandenburg Gate becomes party central for New Year’s Eve in what is often thought to be the biggest New Years celebrations in the world. It all takes place on the ‘Party Mile’ where party-goers gather to enjoy all the festivities and countdown to the New Year. This open air celebration draws close to one million people every year and is a great way to ring in the New Year with lots and lots of party-goers. And after all that partying you are going to need a bed at some stage so get booking your stay at one of these great Berlin hostels.
New Year’s Eve in New York City, USA
New York City is often referred to as the city that never sleeps and on December 31st this is really true! If you are planning a late December trip to The Big Apple then you are in for a treat as NYC is one of the best places to be on New Year’s Eve! Times Square is where the core of the countdown celebrations take place as the historical ball dropping takes place at midnight every December 31st. However, there are also countless parties and events taking place all over New York City on New Year’s so whatever you decide to do just plan ahead. New Year’s Eve in Sydney, Australia
New Year’s Eve in Sydney has a bit of something for everyone of all ages. Sydney Harbour is the hub of celebrations as the bridge and harbour are illuminated with thousands of fireworks setting off from there and at other locations around the harbour. These fireworks can be seen for miles around and draw hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists to the area to ring in the New Year. Adding to this is the Harbour of Lights parade as many boats covered in fairy lights sail through the harbour for the night. Sydney really is a top spot for New Year’s Eve celebrations and if you are lucky enough to see in the New Year here then get booking some cheap accommodation here!
