Things to do in Bratislava for free

A visit to Bratislava, Slovakia's capital city on the Danube River, will provide plenty of things to do for those interested in history, beautiful scenery and great works of art. Luckily, lots of the city's top attractions offer low entrance fees or are completely free of charge. Here, we've come up with a list of five of the top free things to do in Bratislava. While you're in the city, why not try to visit one or more of these great attractions.

The 'Novy most' or New Bridge

Completed in 1972, the New Bridge spans the Danube River from the Old Town area on one side to the Petrzalka neighbourhood on the other. Crossing the bridge using one of the walkways on either side will provide great views of the river as well as the surrounding areas. You'll also get a great look at the UFO-esque structure at the top of the bridge's 84-metre tall tower.

Slavín Monument

A solemn attraction and one with a great significance to the Slovakian people, the Slavín monument was built to honour the almost 6,900 Soviet soldiers who were killed in Bratislava during WWII. Around the 39.5-metre tall column you'll see a number of soldiers' graves as well as a large cross. The monument itself is topped by a statue of Alexander Trizuljak, a Soviet soldier. The complex looks out over the city and here you'll be find a really panoramic look at Bratislava.

Sad Janka Kral'a Park

The place to go if you're looking for a respite from the city centre, this calm and peaceful park is filled with beautiful flowers and tall trees. You'll also come across a lot of funky free-standing art, a large fountain and much more. It's an open park so there's no restriction on when you can visit.

Hviezdoslavovo námestie

This long square stretches from the Slovak National Theatre to the New Bridge. While you sit in the shade provided by the tall trees you can take in the interesting art on display, check out the fountains, or just people watch. One side of the square is lined with cafés, so this is a good place for a drink or a bite to eat too.

Blue Church

One of the most visually stunning sights in Bratislava, the Blue Church or 'Modry kostolik' should be high on your list of places to visit in Bratislava. The exterior, painted in a wide variety of blue hues, is the Church's crowning glory; however, if you step inside you'll also get to see some colourful stained glass windows, impressive chandeliers and even some bright blue pews! Open daily 7am-6pm.
