the place was cold and the staff unfriendly

I am surprised about your comment? We have duvets and blankets on all our beds and you could have asked for an extra blanket at reception. All our outside rooms have electric blankets on the beds. We had one of our coldest winters in years and unlike the Northern hemisphere, we do not specialize in central heating at all as we have two months of cold weather in Joburg. We have heaters in all our common areas and the guests love this! I would love the know the reason for rating the cleanliness at 2 because we have written proof where guests complained that the hostel was too clean!
