Hostal Zocalo really is the best hostel, we've ever been to! It's located directly on the main plaza of Merida in an old colonial-era building(and there is no other accomodation in this location!), and if you're lucky you even get a balcony with plaza-view! The bathroom is shared, and well, not always sooo clean, and also not sooo beautiful, but forget about this! During my 30-day trip in Mexico, this hostel is the only one that I never had a thought of staying longer. In a very nice location though, it made me felt like doing "business" with them instead of living in a hostel. The staffs were the coldest ones I've ever met, and the facility is poor. We asked for not-working hot water, they didn't give us a sign of reply when it fixed. I would say this is the worst hostel/hotel I've ever stayed. fan, from China ~ 4th Jan 2012

Our rooms were small but clean. They had windows only to the inside of the building. Breakfast was outstanding, the best we got anywhere in Mexico. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is great. Dorothea, from Germany ~ 2nd Jan 2012

Breakfast is awesome. Fruit (sweet papaya), coffee, and crepes or omelette cooked for you. Located at Plaza Mayor, the very center of the city but it gets noisy & nearby sidewalks get stressfully crowded. Next time I'd rather stay at Paseo Montejo, also a nodal point but calmer. (Men's) bathroom was far (from my room) and not top-quality. My door was a pain to close everytime. A carpenter would have fixed it in minutes. We spent there 2 nights. The room is very hot however there is a noisy fan inside. The staff are very helpful, the breakfast is perfect! It is on the main square, so the location is perfect! There is free mineral water in the kitchen. Attila, from Hungary ~ 15th Nov 2011
