This was my second stay here and I would definitely go back again. beautiful and characterful building in the heart of Gion, peaceful and comfortable women's dorm, amazingly clean, and with very friendly owners. It attracts a good mix of solo, couple and group travellers from all over the world. Yashi, the male owner, is friendly and helpful and is good at breaking the ice between the various guests and getting everyone talking. A nice place to be as a solo traveller! This is one of the best hostels I stayed and definitely the best hostel I stayed at in Japan. The female dorm with Tatami floor and Futon was like at a Ryokan. The owner and his wife are really friendly and helpful. The location directly in Gion was awesome and it happened more then just once that spotted a Maiko-san on my way back to hostel. The male owner of IchEnSou was very helpful to me on the day I arrived, in prior to my checking in. I had left my bag on the bus from Tokyo to Kyoto and he not only placed calls to find out where my bag was, but offered to be called to act as translator when I arrived at that site. The hostel itself has bundles of character, including lovely wooden furniture he picked out. Importantly, the hostel owners trust you to behave properly and offer courtesy and friendliness in return.
