I chose the Lantana lodge specifically because it was out of the CBD of Auckland. I was looking for a better sleep while still maintaining a fun good atmosphere, which is what I found there. I stayed there with my family in dec/2011. It was the first stop of our first visit to NZ and AUS. And for my sons was the first experience in a non-portuguese/spanish speaking country. I was a bit worried about the first impression. But it was wonderful. The people were very gentle, very friendly (as all the newzealanders). The hostel was simple but clean and very well located. Love the place! Lantana Lodge is clean, safe and in a nice residential area. The staff and the owner are super helpful and it is a quiet place and has free internet (wifi and desktops). I've stayed in a lot of hostels around the world and this is by far the worst! Don't stay here if you can help it. My room stunk! A mixture of sweaty feet and mouldy food. My bed was right next to a wooden patio style door which didn't close properly, every time a gust of wind came I had a curtain in my face. The lockers again stunk, I didn't dare put anything in them and carried everything about with me at all times. I didn't feel safe here at all. Fine for a few days if you want somewhere quiet. Although the place itself is very old. 2 or 3 days there is fine though. Close to the city bit of a walk but easy to get a bus. Not one for the party animals though. Also, largely Asian based. Manager and one staff member with limited english and no knowledge of the area. An OK place.
