I stayed in a dorm and it was fantastic. In terms of facilities and overall atmosphere, it felt like staying in a friend's house, only without the obligation to socialize with the host. Great kitchen and livingroom space (with TV, games, couches, DVD player, and a cat!), but I mostly stayed in the dorm while I was in. There were only three bathrooms, which meant waiting a lot during heavy-use hours, but it wasn't a problem in the afternoon or early morning. Iffy neighborhood, but downtown. My sister and I stayed at this hostel one night for the Army Run taking place in Ottawa. Our room was small and did not look like other pictures posted on the site. My sister woke up at 3 in the morning because of bed bugs. She had bites and rashes all over her body. The employee at the front desk immediately reimbursed us for the night, but then wispered to her coworker that it was not the first time this happened and that they couldn`t rent that room anymore. We really enjoyed our stay in the OBI and recommend it to everyone visiting Ottawa. We all 3 agreed that the OBI was the "best" hostel during our 3 weeks Canada/USA trip. Except that you won't get a breakfast (there is free coffee, though), the atmosphere is awesome. Friendly staff, friendly people from all over the world, a homelike livingroom and kitchen, front porch ... If you plan to visit Ottawa, try to get a bed here! Max, from Germany ~ 18th Sep 2012

I really like this hostel. Location is extremely convenient, especially because it is within 7 minutes of walking from the US Embassy. So when I was told I was not allowed to bring my backpack into the embassy, I could easily go back and forth. It is in a relatively safe area, close to downtown shopping. One thing that strikes me is the hostel is really clean (at least the house I stayed in, which has mixed 6 bed and mixed 4 bed rooms). They cleaned up trash and change towels daily. I had a very enjoyable stay at the Backpacker's Inn. A reminder to those who plan to visit it to take their towel as the towel service is not free ($2). Also it's a good idea to take a lock: there are plenty of lockers so you can leave your stuff. Valeriy, from Ukraine ~ 13th Aug 2012

Bathrooms and kitchen were inadequate for the no. of people staying the the hostel. Staff acknowledged this on check in which was good. The reason that I did not stay in the HI in Ottawa is because travelers who had stayed there recently told me it lacks a vibe, which is something the OBI does really well. The BC guy was good fun to be around and was welcoming. The other staff need work. Suggestion: Need a free signup tour to sort the long term regulars from the backpackers.
