I went with my girlfriend and we had the single room with a double bed. The room had it's own toilet and shower which were both very clean. The only problem we had was our key card did not work properly, so we had trouble getting in to our room, but the staff was always willing to help out. The atmosphere was fun and there were sponsored bar crawls. It was a bit of a walk (10 min) to the nearest underground station, but it is a nice walk and the area seemed safe. Located amid the high-end residential area and next to the Hyde Park and Natural History Museum, and within 10-minute walk to the Kensington High Street, an alternative to Oxford Street for shopping(though much less shops). The hostel is very well decorated, large kitchen and living room, toilets in most rooms, free wifi. Staff is very nice and helpful, one of the best hostels I have ever stayed. The room I stayed in didn't have any curtains so the sun got in early in the morning, I had to wake up early anyway, but having some curtains to filter the light would be a good idea. Laura, from Spain ~ 17th Apr 2012

I generally liked the hostel, the staff were nice and helpful, it has a lot of character and is situated in a very nice and safe neighbourhood close to the centre. However, the cleanliness is poor. This was my second stay in this hostel after almost 2 years (I really liked it the first time) and it was a very unpleasant surprise to see the mould in the bathroom and filthy floors. Although the bed sheets seemed quite clean, when I removed the pillow case I got knocked down by incredible smell. Romana, from Slovakia ~ 6th Apr 2012

Tha place was very good. Clean and well comunicated. I can only say that the breakfast was not that good: no staff to help or organize (so it was a bit messy), not enough cups ans plates and litle options (only white bread and cereals) There is no lift, so consider it if you are carrying a heavy luggage... ´cause the biulding has 4 stories... Good hostel in a great location.Staff was very friendly.Like others have said the security for the rooms is good, but for the whole hostel the door is open to anyone and the front desk sits back away where you can't see, but safe neighborhood so not much of a concern.Other than that the only other comment would be that this hostel was more on the younger side, so kids more worried about drinking and partying and less about seeing the sites, so others should be warned of that. I recommend this hostel to anyone going to london, everything was great. The breakfast is also very nice and the people are very friendly! The only complain was the lack of electricity in the bedroom for the 2 days to charge phones, though we did have light. Inês, from Portugal ~ 17th Mar 2012

The location could not be better. The neighborhood is great, really scenic, and you're close to Hyde Park, the Victoria and Albert, and the Natural History Museum. The room and the bathroom were both really nice and clean, and everything seemed like it worked. Unfortunately, while the front door could be locked, it never was, so I don't feel like the security was really the best, even though I personally didn't have any issues. The main plus about Astor is the location: it's in the very centre of London, in line with the Imperial College and a couple of embassies. It's a 10 min walk from Gloucester Rd tube station so it's well connected to other sites in the city. The building itself is a jewel, with some of the original details, such as the high windows and the entrance door, quite well preserved. The dorm bathrooms are far from clean though and the dining area is gloomy. For non-germfreaks, it's good value for mo Alina, from Romania ~ 7th Mar 2012
