Camellia is a 'good enough' hostel the location is good for getting buses and easily walking to city center, but not close to the university area and nightlife. Rooms are fine, the biggest disappointment was that the staff are not particularly helpful, but perhaps we have been spoiled by excellent hostel staff. Overall there is not a very friendly vibe here compared to many other hostels we've stayed at in China. Nice enough place. Slightly out of the way but the bus routes are easy enough. English can be a bit of a hassle at times but nothing serious. Very much hotel style so you can feel separated from other travelers. Staff were pretty lax at times and it seemed that they were avoiding me whenever I tried to order food. Location OK, a few relevant bus lines nearby, some cheap local restaurants nearby, a 20 min. walk to major shopping hub and "bird and flower market" for local flavor souvenirs and knick-knacks. nice front entry area with deck is good for hanging out during nice weather, check-in area clean and neat, very hotel-like.staff friendly and mostly helpful, although english level varies.hallways and rooms laid out hotel-style.i stayed in 4-person room on first floor facing a rear walkway to the north, s
We are not as you said a budget hotel. On the contrary, we are one of the few hostels in China operating the main stream practices of Hostelling International similar like most YHs in Europe. You may have confused with backpacker hostels and official HI hostels elsewhere. We are also in partnership with NGOs in Yunnan and run a community youth centre within the hostel premises for the purpose of promoting volunteering, social learning and responsibility. We are one of the 35 hostels around the world and the only one in China within the HI network selected to work in a pilot for reducing carbon emission with �Myclimate� (www.myclimate.org). Kunming is having extremely abnormal weather recently which makes our solar water heating installation not sufficiently effective. In the light of these circumstances, our supplementary water heating system by means of air exchanger and heating elements take over. They both consume electricity. In order to minimize the amount of carbon emission, we suspend the use of hot water between 12:00hrs and 18:00 hrs. It is not as you said we are not perfectly prepared to cope with change of weather but we do endeavour to keep a low carbon living wherever possible � being a commitment to our environment.

A very nice place to stay. The rooms are nice, new, and clean. They offer reasonably priced breakfast options, and are at a good location. I will be staying there again. Paul, from USA ~ 15th Feb 2011
