Last Minute in Frankfurt

When I was travelling alone in Germany in 1974, I arrived too late in
Frankfort to do a room search. I noticed in my guidebook (trusty ol'
Arthur Frommer's) that all stations or bahnhofs in Germany had hostel
accomodations available that were very cheap. Cheap indeed, I was directed
to the basement of the station, where for$.50 (USA) I was given a bed in a
dorm that was spotless beyond belief.

The "kicker" was the head matron, whose name was Frau Hitler (I kid you not)
and she was true to her name, a no nonsense type of lady, she herded me to
the food line where we had delicious bean soup, and then she made sure we
all were quietly bedded down. The dorm room was filled with the sad cries of
the street women having nightmares, but on the whole the experience was
incredible. Even the 5:00 a.m. hitting the bedrails to rouse us was fun.
All this for $.50 and a Hitler, although a kind and caring one that gave one
hope for the name.
