We enjoyed our stay at Red Lantern House. The only thing we didn't like were the ducks in the the courtyard. Thats the reason for "average" in cleanliness!

Highlights: - clean rooms - friendly staff who'll give you great public transportation directions; solid English speakers by the way - excellent location, close to many nearby monuments and easily accessible via public transportation - cheap beer at 4RMB for a massive bottle of the local brew

If you want a taste of an authentic Hutong area this hostel provides just that opportunity. Staff really great, engaging, cheerful, and nothing being too much trouble. Special thank you to Jenny.

The Red Lantern is great - beautiful, centrally located, clean and with an awesome staff. The only reason this score isn't higher is that I wouldn't really categorize it as "fun" - the set-up is such that all the dorm and bed rooms face the one giant dining room/lounge (though it isn't very loungey, the furniture is a bit spartan). So even though there's a bar, the presence of even one family or older couple who hit the hay at ten o'clock really dampens any party atmosphere you may attempt to
