Jagatram Niwas is a family-run homestay guest house in the ancient village of Heini, in the foothills of the Himalayan Dhauladhar range.The guesthouse is situated above Dharamsala and McLeodganj - the home of the Dalai Lama - and is an ideal base for trekking, excursions, and exploring the locality.The views and natural surroundings are stunning, with diverse flora and fauna, including kites, monkeys and mongooses.We have nine comfortable, stylishly furnished twin and double rooms, five with attached bathroom and use of shared kitchen, and four with use of our four shared bathrooms. Breakfast is included and we can also offer traditional Himachali home-cooked dinners.The atmosphere is welcoming - the two brothers who own Jagatram Niwas live on-site with their families - but guests may also enjoy privacy as they wish, sitting out on our huge terraces. Whether you are looking for activities (including trekking and mountaineering) or a peaceful retreat, Jagatram Niwas offers a great holiday.
The guest house is a five-to-ten-minute walk from the road, so we will meet you upon your arrival to show you the way. You will be contacted by Jagatram Niwas after you make your booking, to arrange your transfer to the guest house from Dharamsala/McLeodganj.We are situated a 15-minute taxi-ride up from McLeodganj, along a very rough jeep road, followed by a five-ten-minute walk through village Heini. The village of Bhagsu is fifteen minute's walk below us, from where it as a five-minute taxi or auto-rickshaw ride to McLeodganj.McLeodganj and Bhagsu offer hundreds of small stalls, shops and restaurants.There are many local places of interest, to which we are happy to arrange excursions. These include Kangra Fort, Jawalamukhi Flame Temple, Masrur rock-cut temple, Tata Pani hot springs, and the Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Arts and Culture.We are also happy to arrange short treks up to Triund, and longer trips to Bharmour, Kugti, Spiti and Manali.

Before booking, please bear in mind that Jagatram Niwas is a homestay guesthouse and not a hotel. Besides breakfast and evening meals, we do not provide room service. We do however have a guest kitchen, which you are welcome to use to prepare drinks and snacks, and we are happy to arrange excursions and treks upon request.Check-in time is 12pm and check-out time is 11am. If you arrive early in the morning (e.g. by overnight bus from Delhi), we will be happy for you check in early, at no extra cost, provided your room is available. Failing this, we will be happy to provide you with a waiting room, if available. If neither of these options is available, you will be welcome to wait on our terraces until your room is ready. If you require breakfast upon arrival, this will be charged at Rs 50 per person.We request that guests keep noise to a minimum after 10pm in consideration of other guests and the family who live on site.We do not provide wi-fi or televisions in the rooms. However, there is an internet café next to Heena Café, five to ten minutes’ walk away (although opening times can be erratic). 3G data cards also work at the guest house, although not at broadband speeds, and there are many internet cafes in Bhagsu and McLeodganj.Please also bear in mind that Jagatram Niwas is located out of town, so guests should be prepared to do quite a lot of walking, or to take taxis back and forth to the bridge near Heena Café.Regarding luggage, we advise guests to bring backpacks. If you decide to bring suitcases or hold-alls, and require assistance with transporting them, we charge Rs 100 per porter for one journey from the bridge to the guest house.

Please note that, although village Heini is officially part of Upper Bhagsu, road access is via McLeodganj and Dharamkot.Jagatram Niwas is located 20-25 minutes from McLeodganj. To reach the guest house, you can take the 15-minute taxi ride up the tarmac road to Dharamkot and along the rough jeep road to Heini, followed by a five to ten-minute walk through the village and its fields.To get back down to McLeodganj, you can make the 15-minute walk to Bhagsunag, down steep concrete steps, followed by a five-minute autorickshaw ride. You can return to the guest house via the same route, but it is steep.After you have made your reservation, Hostelworld will send us your e-mail address, so that we can contact you to arrange your taxi transfer. Please ensure that your e-mail address is correct.Hostelworld will also send you our contact details, so that you can e-mail or phone us nearer your time of arrival.Plane: Kingfisher Airlines used to fly from Delhi to Dharamsala, but this service has been suspended. Please check the internet for updates.Bus: Deluxe and 'local' buses travel from Delhi to Dharamsala/McLeodganj, from where we can arrange taxi transfer.Train: From Delhi or Amritsar to Pathankot, then either a local bus to Dharamsala, or a taxi transfer.Taxi transfers can also be arranged direct from Amritsar.The guesthouse is a five-to-ten-minute walk along a footpath from the taxi drop-off point.
