Step outside our front door and the world famous Edinburgh castle looms above!!!

Stay with us in our palatial hostel for a true Edinburgh experience. Inside, our hostel offers tremendous views over the city from our bright, sunny, rooms. We also offer the best facilities, everything from WI-FI internet to a movie room, a delightful garden patio to a traditional coal fire for those winter nights! And plenty plenty more…

Being at the very heart of the city we're just a stroll from the bus, train and airport bus and though we are in a relatively quiet street (so you can get a good night's sleep), the city's wonderful late late nightlife is just around the corner – ideal!

Built in 1846 and turned into a backpackers in 1997, rather than going the way of some of being a modern sterile hostile, we have packed this grand old edifice full of art, character and antiquity. We think you will love it. Some people say it is more an art gallery or museum than a hostel, but it's fundamentally a place to put your feet up and relax in comfort, or join in the fun with fellow travellers.

Our receptionists will always give you a friendly welcome and can help with any questions about what to see in Edinburgh or about travel around Scotland. We aim to look after you totally so you can have the best holiday possible.

Truly superb location under the castle ramparts and a great view of Hogwarts school from the common room.

We think you will love it with our bright, sunny and spacious rooms and great facilities. We have a vibrant atmosphere with a choice of lounges, with free Wi-Fi, a big-screen movie lounge with both Scottish and mainstream movies, a delightful patio and a fireplace for those cold winter nights as well as plenty of room to kick back and relax or join in the fun with other travellers. The big lounge has a jukebox, a pool table, a piano and free tea and coffee.

We’re open 24hrs a day, every day of the year, with luggage storage and a 24hr safe available for total security.

There are bedside lockers in all rooms, which also feature clean bed linen (with properly fitted sheets). There’s no hidden charges.

We have hot and powerful showers, free hair dryers and a large self-catering kitchen. Breakfast is available for only £1.80 and our laundry service is just £3.50.

This is a pick-up point for the free city walking tours and MacBackpackers tours.

Go green and carbon neutral; fifteen years ago we bought a 75+ hectare woodland that absorbs more than the total CO² emissions from fuel used in our hostel and also the other properties in our small MacBackpackers hostel and bus company chain. We also try our best to recycle everything (with your help) and our electricity is all sourced from renewable, non-nuclear supplies. Stay with us for a great holiday and minimal environmental impact!

We also have two other hostels in the Old Town of Edinburgh, both available here on Hostelworld: the small and vibrant Royal Mile Backpackers and the historic High Street Hostel, Edinburgh's original independent hostel!

Any group of 6 or more guests need to contact the hostel directly, failure to contact the hostel will result in the cancellation of your reservation.

The minimum age to stay in this hostel is 18 years old.

Sorry but no Stag/Bucks or hen parties allowed.

Prices are per person per night.

From Waverley Street Bridge (with Princes Street behind you), walk up Cockburn St to the Royal Mile. Once you reach the Royal Mile turn right and walk up this street. Keep going until you reach a roundabout (a building called 'The Hub' will be in front of you). At this roundabout take a left down Johnston Terrace. We are down here on the left.
