Housed in a former distillery warehouse, spacious and friendly Port Charlotte Youth Hostel boasts wonderful sea views and is an ideal place to relax, unwind and explore the Isle of Islay.

The youth hostel sits in the village of Port Charlotte, right beside a safe sandy beach on the shore of Loch Indaal. Multi-share rooms are available, but the youth hostel is also family friendly and provides private rooms. Facilities include a spacious and well-equipped self-catering kitchen overlooking the bay and a roomy lounge with TV and comfy furniture.

SYHA is a charity aiming to inspire all, especially young people, to broaden their horizons, gain knowledge and independence through new experiences of adventure and discovery. In support of this aim, all bookings will include a temporary membership fee per person per night which is displayed as an inclusive rate. (Full, existing members of SYHA and HI using this booking engine are not entitled to a membership refund).
Port Charlotte Youth Hostel reception is open 08.00-10.00 and 17.00-22.00, with check-in from 17.00 and checkout by 10.00.
Late arrival and access outside opening hours is by pre-arrangement only. The front door is locked at 23.30.
From the age of 5 to 15 years, young people must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and may be accommodated in a single-gendered shared room with the parent or guardian and other guests, at the discretion and responsibility of the parent or guardian. The young person/people, the parent/guardian and the other occupants of the room must be of the same gender.
SYHA advise that additional notice be given to the destination youth hostel when travelling with children, to ensure that suitable accommodation is available. Contact details can be found on your booking confirmation.
Parties with young children (under 5 years) will only be accommodated in designated family rooms, where available. There is no capacity for extra beds or cots in a shared dormitory or private accommodation.
When booking for more than 9 people:
• Full prepayment is required within 8 weeks of arrival as otherwise the booking will automatically be cancelled
• The following cancellation charges will apply to the entire booking:
57 days or more - 20% of total cost
56 to 29 days - 55% of total cost
28 to day of arrival - 100% of total cost
No stag or hen parties are permitted at any youth hostel.

By bus: bus leaves from Port Askaig and Port Ellen Ferry Terminal to Port Charlotte. The bus stops outside the youth hostel gate in the village of Port Charlotte, Last bus 17.00. There are no buses on a Sunday.
From Port Ellen take the A846 signposted Bowmore/Bridgend. Turn left at Bridgend onto A847, (signposted Bruichaddich/Portnahaven). Follow road for about 8 miles and the youth hostel is on the right as you enter Port Charlotte
From Port Askaig follow A846 for about 8 miles, turn right at Bridgend onto A847 (signposted Bruichladdich/ Portnahaven). Follow road for about 8 miles and the youth hostel is on the right as you enter Port Charlotte
By ferry: runs from Kennacraig to Islay 7 days a week. From Oban/Colonsay Wednesdays only. Please check with Caledonian MacBrayne for ferry timetables (0800 066 5000) and with Islay Coaches for the connecting bus services (01496 840273)
By air: two daily flights from Glasgow to Islay by BA
Next to the youth hostel is a Natural History Visitor Centre and close by in the village is the award-winning Museum of Local History. Local events include a Whisky Festival and various music festivals throughout the year. Comprehensive information is available at the youth hostel on arrival.
