This is by far the nicest hostel I've ever stayed at. It's not in the heart of London, but you can get south of the Thames in under 25 minutes, so it really isn't that bad. A minute and a half walk from Swiss Cottage Tube station on the Jubilee line. The area is not very hip, but it's safe and there are a lot of young people hanging about the hostel bar (which is quite nice, though with limited selection). Palmers Lodge was a pleasant place to stay. It's almost like a small mansion that's been converted into a hostel. We had a twin room ensuite (bathroom included). The room was amazingly small, but since the point of the trip was to be out and about, it wasn't too big a deal. It's close to an underground stop, which makes it easy to get around to other parts of London. The staff was helpful, they have 6 computers available to use, and a fairly large lounge room.
