Big Tree Lodge Methven
Relax by a cosy fire in our colonial-era lodge after a hard day on the slopes!
Big Tree Lodge combines Colonial charm with the comforts of home. This large colonial villa and former vicarage still features most of the original timber panelling and furniture. It also offers free high-speed Wi-Fi, a free internet terminal, free laundry facilities, modern and spacious bathrooms with separate toilets and a comfy community living room including a log burner, books, jigsaws, boards games and DVDs. Our huge, fully-equipped kitchen is directly connected to the living area.
There are six lockable bedrooms: twin, double or four-bed share plus one three-bed share room for our female guests. And the best part? No bunk beds!
Our beds are made up with fresh linen and duvets, clean and heated. In wintertime there are optional electric blankets available, if you're too tired to relax by the cosy log burner after a hard day on the slopes.
We have free lockable dry-rooms and snowboard/ski tuning (wax $10, wax'n'edging $20). If you want to tune the gear yourself, that's for free too! Besides skiing, there are plenty of other activities available including hot air balloon rides, tandem sky diving, jet boating, golf, abseiling, horse riding, cycling, fishing and many mountain and bush walks.
Within easy 5mins walking distance of Big Tree Lodge are several bars and coffee shops. The Paradiso Art House Movie Theatre puts on extra shows when needed. The i-site visitor centre is in the main street and has 3 ski and snowboard shops close by. This boutique village is surprisingly well equipped with two supermarkets, galleries, an indoor skate park, book shop, laundromat and a gymnasium. Methven has many eateries, most of which are 5 minutes from our backpacker lodge. We think Dom's is terrific (the chicken/cranberry pizza is fantastic) and the pubs and restaurants are pretty good too!
We also offer free private off-street parking, mountain transport and door-to-door airport transfer and 15% discount vouchers for ski shop rentals at one of the ski shops in Methven. Plus, we're only five minutes' walk from town centre!
We're looking forward to welcoming you at the Big Tree Lodge!

Big Tree Lodge Methven is located at 25 South Belt, two streets from the town centre of Methven Mt Hutt Village.
From Christchurch head south towards Timaru on State Highway 1. Look for the Big Fish on the right just over the Rakaia River Bridge and turn right before the Mobil petrol station. At the roundabout turn left towards Mayfield down 'Thompsons Track' (about 18kms) then follow the signs for Methven (about another 18kms). At the main intersection in Methven with the Blue Pub on your right, turn left down the main street (SH77) and South Belt is the second street on the right. This is the quickest route.
From Queenstown and the inland lakes: The short route for those in a hurry: from SH8 in Fairlie, turn left at the sign to Geraldine and follow SH 72 (the Inland Scenic Route) until Mayfield then turn right at the major intersection just out of Mayfield where you then turn almost immediately left (signpost says Rakaia). Keep on this road till you come to a T-intersection, and then turn left as the sign post says to Methven. When you come to the 50km sign South Belt is the next left go down to no.25 on the left.
For those not in a hurry take the scenic route along SH72, turn right down Pudding Hill Road towards Methven turn right down Hobbs Road and go round the back of the Golf Club, further down the road this becomes South Belt. After Wayne place we are on the right down the driveway to the right (nice and quiet!)
You can take a shuttle bus from Christchurch Airport to Methven - departing 3 times daily in winter. Prebook it with Methven Travel and then on arrival go to the Travel and Information Desk in the International Arrivals Hall where the driver will meet you.
Travel Times vary depending on road conditions. Allow 10-20 minutes drive to the base of Mt Hutt and at least an hour 15 to Christchurch Airport while road conditions are variable.
We are in Methven Mt Hut Village close to the Mt Hutt Ski Field and are an easy hour or so drive to the outskirts of Christchurch City. Porters Pass and the Canterbury 'Clubfields', which are smaller ski areas (Mt Olympus, Broken River and Craigieburn), are close by.
