HI Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel
Perched on a cliff overlooking the rocky Pacific coast, the Point Montara lighthouse was once one of the most important signals for navigators approaching San Francisco’s harbor. Today, it’s still a beacon for travelers: the lighthouse grounds are home to one of the highest-customer-rated HI hostels in the world. Come to HI-Point Montara Lighthouse and relax in a cozy dorm or private room overlooking the ocean, wander the native plant garden, or walk down to the water to explore the tide pools and secluded beach.
Just 25 miles south of San Francisco, HI-Point Montara offers an affordable seaside getaway for Bay Area locals and international guests alike. From the hostel, make your way a short distance down the coast to surf (or watch) the famous Mavericks break, or paddle tamer waves in a kayak. On land, bicycle scenic Hwy. 1, ride horse-back along the seashore, or explore the coastal towns of Half Moon Bay and Pacifica (each just 7 miles away).
Back at the hostel, sip a latte from the on-site espresso bar as you sit beside the lighthouse, enjoy free Wi-Fi in the comfy lounge, or take advantage of hostel activities such as game nights and movie screenings.
Guests at this Certified Green hostel can choose to stay in either private or shared dorm-style rooms, some with water views. Guests can also enjoy a fully equipped self-service kitchen complete with ocean-view dining area, as well as an outdoor picnic area with barbecue grill.

DirectionsShow MapHide Map
The hostel is located 25 miles south of San Francisco, just off Coastal Highway One at 16th Street, between the small towns of Montara and Moss Beach. The lighthouse is not easily visible from the road, and is located on a curve in the road.
When driving south on Highway 1, the hostel driveway is located just past the end of a guardrail -- turn right and drive through the chain-link fence gate into the parking lot.
When driving north on Highway 1, we highly recommend passing the hostel entrance and turning around in Montara, then entering the hostel driveway from the southbound lane.
Free parking is available at the hostel on a first-come first-served basis.
USING PUBLIC TRANSIT
From the Daly City BART station, take SamTrans bus 110 to the Linda Mar Park and Ride in Pacifica.
On WEEKDAYS, take SamTrans bus 294 from Pacifica to Highway 1 and 16th Street. Tell the driver where you are going, as 16th Street is not an automatic stop. Walk north 1/2 block on Highway 1; the hostel is on your left.
On WEEKENDS, take SamTrans bus 17 from Pacifica to Main and 7th Streets. Walk south on Main (which becomes a pedestrian path) to 16th Street and carefully cross the highway onto the hostel driveway.
