Melito was founded by the inhabitants of Pentadattilo, moved to these places because it flat and secure as well as more productive in hydrogeological structures. The choice of the name 'Porto Salvo' is linked to the landing of Garibaldi in 1860 and 1862: it is precisely here, in fact, that the ship ran aground Thousand besieged by Bourbon troops who forced Ramirez Garibaldi repaired at Palace, now called the Casina Thousand. On the facade of the building you can still see the ball cannon of a ship Bourbon, evident witness of that battle. The name 'Melito' is probably related to the production of honey, widely spread. The pride of the economy of Melito di Porto Salvo is the cultivation of bergamot that in this area has found its ideal habitat, growing lush and abundant. As for the historical and cultural heritage, include the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, which, built in 1680 at the behest of the Marquis Domenico Alberti, holds within it the picture of Our Lady of Porto Salvo (600), so dear to melitesi. Pentidattilo (or Pentedattilo) is a center of Hellenistic culture of the hilly town of Melito di Porto Salvo, in Reggio, and owes its name to the particular shape of the outcrop of rocks of Mount Calvary, the site of the ancient settlement that, in the collective , looked like a huge hand (see greek 'penta', 'five' and 'dàktylos', 'fingers'). Inhabited since the earliest times, was colonized by the Greeks of the seventh century BC in Chalcis and soon became a strategic center for the control of the St. Elias Fiumara, then over navigable channel for the Aspromonte. Later rulers took turns here, as in the rest of Calabria until reaching the long rule of the Alberti, the local noble family to which they are linked and that many popular legends retained power until the late eighteenth century. Today, after decades of abandonment and emigration, Pentedattilo has been developing a little 'further downstream, so as to make the ancient Pentidattilo a sort of ghost town: the definition is actually very fitting, since, especially in recent years, the village was taken and developed with major international arts festivals such as Paleariza, a traveling show that here in greek culture Pentedattilo has a fixed stop.
