Baikal Trail House
This is a small, family-run property with 5 dorm beds available in total. There is a kitchen (fridge, crockery, cutlery etc) that you could use if you feel like cooking. The bathroom and toilet are shared and of course there is the washing machine.
The property is also our family home and we hope you will feel very happy here too.
Experience the outdoor beauty of northern Lake Baikal. Severobaikalsk (Северобайкальск) is a base for coastal and forest trails, village homestays, camping by Lake Baikal and nearby lake, visiting hot springs, and hiking to a Stalin-era gulag mine. Severobaikalsk can be reached by the BAM train line and by hydrofoil from Irkutsk.
It is possible to do independent hikes and we can help you arrange transport and could probably answer most of your questions. Guides and guided tours could also be arranged.
The Baikal Trail Property is about 1 km from the Severobaikalsk train station and about 2 km from the hydrofoil landing. It was started in 2007 to house Great Baikal Trail (GBT) volunteers and independent travelers. GBT is a Siberian based international effort to build trails in the Lake Baikal region to provide an infrastructure for ecotourism (an alternative to industrial development). See www.greatbaikaltrail.org for projects open to Russian and international volunteers.
Our staff is affiliated with GBT. We are concerned with environmental protection and have knowledge about outdoor activities. Your stay helps to support trail-building and environmental protection efforts.

How do I get to the hostel?
If you arrived in Severobaikalsk by train, you should go through the train station and then turn right and walk along the street 60 Years of the USSR past the city market, until you get to the intersection with Studencheskaya Street. Turn left and walk along Studencheskaya Street until you get to a typical 5-story Soviet building on your left with the address Studencheskaya Street 12. Go in through the second entryway, which has a sign that says '2 (16-30)'. You'll see a sign in the window to the left of the entryway door that says 'Walking Bear'. The door has a security system, but sometimes it is left open - check to see. If the door doesn't open, dial '16' on the keypad next to the door and wait for an answer. We will unlock the door for you, and wait for you on the first floor in apartment 16.
The flat is situated in short walking distance from the train station. It is on the ground floor, so will save your legs for the treks!
There is a market around the corner and the town centre is a short walk away too. There are a couple of cafes at the market, where you could try 'posi' (Buryat's dumpling), pancakes and the rest of hearty Russian fare. Also, there are a number of camping/fishing/hunting shops if you need to buy more gear.
