Good hostel but a little expensive. It is a relative bargain for lodging in DC, but $35 per night is above the international rate for large group rooms.
Scott: Yes, DC is an expensive city, but we really try to pack in all the FREE amenities we can! Glad you thought we were a bargain, anyway! ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC

well located, 15 min walk from white house and 20 from the mall. cheap in comparison with others, nice staff and they organize lots of walks, pizza evening, going out together, ... quite good.
my room was not that clean and expensive for what I got, but that´s dc...
would come back
Enrique: Yes, DC is an expensive city. Hotel rooms routinely cost $300 and up, but we stay below $45, year-round -- as low as $27 in the off season! But we are all glad you enjoyed your visit and our hospitality! ~ Mark Schneider, General Maanager HI-DC

We had a wonderful stay. Staff was friendly and helpful. Hostels *can* be noisy but with a good set of ear plugs, I heard nothing! Susie the Elevator is very slow and noisy, but the squeak could easily be repaired with three sheet metal screws and a cordless screwdriver. :-) Location is perfect! Walk to everything! Free breakfast was great and appreciated. (We saved a lot of money not having to buy McDonalds for breakfast.) Free tours were fantastic too, especially the Georgetown Pub C
Denise: Yes Suzie is slow and she makes a little noise, but we are set to have an upgrade to her doors that should speed things up a bit and quiet her down some, as well. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for taking time out to write to us! ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC

It would be great if you had other room lighting besides the ceiling light which was yucky. Most hostels have lamps and/or bunk reading lights to be able to read w/o disturbing others.
Cathy: You bring up a very good suggestion. We are tackling that right now. Unfortunately, we have some constraints. There are not enough power outlets to install some lamps quickly (hostellers need the plugs to recharge their electronics). We cannot simply install new power outlets due to the costs and the load on on the electrical system. That leaves battery-operated units, but used batteries are terrible for the environment (and we take our environmental impact very seriously, as the only hostel in the world to be Energy Star Certified). Our front-runner for ideas is to find LED reading lamps because they are very efficient. Thanks for the input! ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC
