One of the best hostels I stayed in in China. Great spot on the island just up the hill from the Ferry docks. It's a great place to just hang out at during the day, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Would love to come back some day.

great location, not too far away from the ferry port. excellent environment. the common room is awesome with a reading room on top of it. if you like pets, there are a dog and a few cats there. there is a misunderstanding. 1-bed dorm here is not a single-bed room; it just means one bed in a 4- or 6-bed dorm.

The location was great but the place was far too cold in Jan/Feb with all the windows and doors constantly open (as is the chinese way!). Nice communal area if it wasnt too cold and the internet needs to have a time limit on it as the same people tended to stay on the computer all night!

This hostel is being renovated ( it's a shame - cause it was once a lovely colonial style building - but they are knocking all that out and replacing all the fixtures with simply stunning aluminium window frames and doorways...) - they start bashing down walls etc at 7 in the morning. When I arrived there was a pile of rubble at my door ( easily 10cms hight!) - the bulider person had to clear it away so I could get in my room. Once they fix everyhing up it will be a reasonable place to stay. The independant hostel on the same road ( you will see it just before you get to this one) has a much nicer feel and look to it ( very colonial with shutters etc), and a lovely shady courtyard and a cafe...if I had of known about it, I would have stayed there instead - I can't remember the full name of it, but the name of the hostel has 'coffee' in it and the prices were the same as this one - HI Hostels are relying on their old reputation in my opinion as this is the 3rd HI Hostel I have stayed at that has been sub standard - The UHostels have been much better as a whole ( and no I don't work for them!!)...and don't listen to the lonely planet either when it comes to China - CHOCKED FULL OF MISINFORMATION..always double check on the Frommer's website - they have been 'bang on' about all the places I have visited..not like LP..Happy travels!! And visit this little island called Gulangu - exit Xiamen immediately..Gulangyu is lovely - Xiamen is defintely not.
