The only reason to go to Cartago is to be near the Irazu Volcano. If you have your own car, we very much recommend Casa Aura BB which is in the middle of the city and has a safe parking lot (for two cars). Family run, more something like a private house, 70's style, but you get everything you need, including a great breakfast. It is clean and secure which we felt was important in Cartago as a tourist.
