Cycling Across Canada

CYCLING ACROSS CANADA Submit a Tale here | More Tales
My name is Sig, I'm 33 years young and I crossed Canada on my bicycle. I started out in May 1997 and spent 4 months in Canada cycling from Vancouver, B.C. to Calgary, Alberta. I was in love with Canada right from the first moment. After 4 months spent cycling; most of the time slept in my tent, a couple times in hostels; I flew home, sold everything, quit my job and came back to Canada 8 weeks later.

I spent the winter in Alberta, enjoying the snow, and started cycling again the following summer from Calgary, Alberta to Montreal, Quebec. I spent winter in the United States, and came up to Montreal again the following summer. I started out from Montreal, Quebec, finished my trip to see the east coast in Canada and cycled to the Maritimes, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. It took me 3 years to do it, but finally, I did it and that's everything. That's what counts.

I slept mostly on farms for the second and the third year. If I saw a farm I asked the farm-owner, if I could sleep in his barn. Most of the time, people invited me into their houses. I was always amazed, that people are so great and so helpful. You ask for nothing, only shelter, and get everything.

I still can't believe it, how great people are and I want to thank everybody on this planet, who made my trip possible and as wonderful as it was. Thanks to everybody, thanks for being there.

I wanted to travel Canada on my bike for many reasons: it's environmental friendly - I love biking - see nature as good and close as you can - get in touch with people - see the beauty of nature - become aware of things - get a feeling for important things instead of running after money for no reason.
