Very good and cheap place to put up with no frails. Recommend for guys, who can "rough" it out. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. For instance, they gave me better directions on how to get to Kouyasan than the station crew. Enjoyed my stay. However, they only allow change of bed sheets after one week. Fortunately, I made reservations in blocks of two and three days and got away with new sheets. It may sound stupid, but book in blocks instead of one whole stretch

It's clean compared to the rest of the world at this price range. And it really is surprisingly clean for the price. The Ojiisan(old guy), there is always happy, and seems like a really nice guy, but Tohyoh really is located in the slum or ghetto as one of my Japanese friends called it, who had at some point lived at the hostel next door. It might be sort of dangerous to women who are alone, especially Asians. But like the rest of Japan, it's a pretty safe area.

hostels.com should be embarrassed about having them on their website. A woman was urinating in the street out front, the whole area stunk of urine and was surrounded by homeless people and rats. Entire building horrible. We paid for 2 nights but left after 1 night! toilets dont get cleaned, bath is used for storage and if you want a private shower you have to walk around corner, thats if you can find anyone who can understand you enough to direct. bad, bad, very bad!
