I stayed in several hostels during my time in Moscow and St Petersburg and have to say the Comrade Hostel was by far the best. In fact, we liked it so much that we kept returning to say Hi and hang out even though we had to stay somewhere else after returning to Moscow from St Petersburg because the place was fully booked! It's cheap, clean and comfortable which are the essential components of a good hostel. On top of that, the staff are the friendliest and most helpful hostel staff I've encountered. There are two WC/shower rooms; this seemed to be ample provision for the number of guests even when fully booked. They are kept very clean and there was a constant supply of hot water for the showers, the fixtures and fittings are modern and in excellent condition – which is more than can be said for other Russian hostels I have stayed in! The stairwell does give a misleading first impression but reserve judgement until you're through the door at the top of the stairs - I guarantee you'll be very pleasantly surprised. It is difficult to find but well worth the effort! Just make sure you look for an A4 white paper sign saying ‘Comrade Hostel’ in the top floor window, rather than looking for a sign on the door – there isn’t one. To my mind, this just makes the place one of Moscow’s best kept secrets ;o) The beds are ridiculously comfortable and each has its own individual reading lamp which is great if you want to avoid waking everyone up by slamming on the main ceiling light – a consideration often overlooked in other hostels. The internet connection is super-fast which makes Comrade Hostel a really good base to plan your excursions/next journey stage from. Also, skype and a discounted international telephone are available which is very useful. The hostel is quite small but that's exactly what makes it feel like home. I hate huge impersonal hostels with dozens of dorms and no personality. If that's what you're after then this is not the place for you. Comrade Hostel gets my highest recommendation and I shall certainly be returning to stay there myself.

Not a hostel but a flat. Friendly staff, good location but a poor hostel.

Denis is very helpful, but i definately would not recommend this hostel, worst i ever stayed in. No hot water. Door to entrance stairs was hanging off, and the stairs area was disgusting i don't want to go into detail!!

We were rather disappointed with this hostel for a couple of reasons. First, on our second day there, the hot water stopped working and was still not fixed when we left. It seems like providing a hot shower for your guests is one of the basic jobs of any hostel. Also, the entire time we were there, there were people sleeping on mattresses in the kitchen, which all but eliminated the common spaces, making it difficult to relax outside the room without disturbing someone else.

Ok by Moscow standards I think but still fairly poor when compated to the rest of the civilised (and much of the not-so-civilised world).
