Friendly Gecko Guesthouse in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Welcome to the Friendly Gecko Guest House!

We are a \'socially responsible guest house\' in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We want to offer a convenient and safe accomodation for a reasonable price. As a \'social\' contribution we invest 100% of our profits into the help2kids children\'s home.

Our guest house is located outside of the city centre of Dar es Salaam in a safe and quiet neighborhood. With our large garden and community areas we offer a convenient and relaxed place to recover after a hectic and hot day in \'downtown\' Dar es Salaam. We are also the home of up to 10 volunteers who support projects in the neighborhood (the help2kids children\'s home and a public school). Join our community and take part of our daily adventures. We are more a home than a guest house, we love to meet new people, to eat/drink/go out together and to show you around.

All rooms are fitted with mosquito nets and fans. There is also air-conditioning in the private roooms. Snacks and drinks (water/sodas/beer) are always available in the living room. There is also a TV, DVD player in our community area. For a low fee internet access can be used.

In our big garden there is a gathering area with tables, chairs and hammocks. We also offer a weekly BBQ. More pictures will follow soon.

Accommodation Information

We have a 6-bed female dorm and a 4-bed male dormitory. They are fully equipped with mosquito nets, fans and shelfs. Each dorm has its own bathroom. Our private rooms are also equipped with mosquito nets, safes, shelfs, fans and air-conditioning. Moreover you have your own bathroom.

The state run electricity supply is unfortunately not very reliable (in average we have 16 hours electricity per day). Therefore electronic devices such as air-conditioning or TV may not be permenantly available.

Location Information
Our Guest House is located outside of down-town Dar es Salaam at the Africana District. It is very close to the well known \'White Sands\' area where the boats for tourists are heading off to Mbudya Island. There are some reasons why we prefer to be outside of the center: We want to have space, a lot of \'green\' around ourselves and no noise or smog. Moreover we are very close to our orphanage.

Therefore electronic devices such as air-conditioning or TV may not be permenantly available. However we decided not to have a generator. First of all it is not ecological and it is noisy, moreover we believe that it isn't really necessary. We have always running water, our kitchen is gas operated, we have safe candle holders in each room and bathroom and our internet is working electricity independant. In addition it is just part of the real "African" way of live that there is not constantly electricity and very soon you experience that it isn't as important as you thought at home.
