San Fermin

SAN FERMIN Submit a Tale here | More Tales
The day is July 7, 2001. The place: "San Fermin" (the running of the bulls) in Pamplona, Spain. It's 8am on the day of the opening ceremony and I am walking to the Town Square with friends - Australian friends I met two weeks before and a few Spaniards I met in Pamplona. It is 8:30 am when the mayor arrives on the balcony of the town hall and all you hear are voices screaming "VIVA SAN FERMIN" (long live San Fermin).

At this moment it starts to rain and it is pouring down but no one seems to care. You look around and there are corks from champagne bottles flying through the air and people dancing in the rain. The excitement in the air is amazing; it's almost intoxicating and the people around you are starting to become genuinely intoxicated from champagne and sangria.

I realize this will be a long day of celebrating. The locals and tourists are involved in this fiesta (as they call it) like you wouldn't believe. Later after talking to some locals I realize this will be a long week, for seven days this celebration will go on full force. Seven days later I am counting down the days until next year's celebration. VIVA SAN FERMIN!
