YHA Ambleside in Lake District, England

I am 65+ and have been a youth hosteller since my teens. I visit from Canada without a car and use the Ambleside YHA as a very convenient entry point to the Lake District after arriving by train to Windermere. It is great for my purpose. I am impressed that the staff manage to keep my sleeping quarters isolated from the hordes of noisy school children I encounter on the ground floor! Diane, from England ~ 28th Jul 2009

Beautiful location at the north end of Lake Windermere. I had originally hoped to be in Windermere, but I am very glad that I wasn't able to secure lodgings there; it is much too busy. The Ambleside YHA is a much better location. Some walks available and easy access to bus service make the YHA very convenient. It's great to grab a draft in the evening and sit on the grass in the early evening sunlight. very well run hostel & all the staff were very professional & friendly. Excellent breakfasts. Evening meals were not such good value & lacked seasoning/flavour.Having to take all 3 courses at the same time meant that main course was cold by the time soup was finished, & hot dessert was no longer hot by the time I got to it.
