History of this town is more than 3 milleniums old.
Celts arrived to this area in 4th century BC. They conquered aboriginal Illyrs and established their community Segestica.
In 1st century BC, after Romans had conquered Celtic Segestica, Siscia was established as the capital of Pannonia Savia province, on the left bank of Kupa river.
The commander of Roman army which conquered Celtic Segestica in 35 BC was Octavian, the one who has later became the first Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus.
Groundplan of today's Sisak is greatly the same as the one of Roman Siscia, so walking through the city streets you actually follow Roman footsteps, burried under your feet.
Archeological park "Sisak in situ" offers the visitors insight to open spaced and protected town ramparts of Siscia and remains of Roman architecture.
Croatian duke Ljudevit Posavski, leader of the greatest mutiny against Francs in 9th century, settled his place of government right in the town Sisak.
The guardian of these years is Sisak town Museum. The permanent exhibition atracts a number of visitors. Special atmosphere begins with introducing a documentary movie of Sisak's history.
During the middle of 16th century the famous fortress was built.
On Kupa's estuary to Sava River stands the witness of the most important Croatian victory - Fort of the Old Town. Under its walls ban Toma Bakač defected mightier Turks in 1593 year.
One of the oldest bricklaid buildings built at the end of 18th century is Mali Kaptol. Today it houses the Turist office.
Mediaeval Sissek , later Sziszek from the end of 19th century was the largest Croatian river port.
The first steam boat in Croatian history was Sloga from Sisak, bought in 19th century in Austria. The permanent decoration of promenade and very well known symbol of Sisak town is Old Bridge on Kupa River, built of bricks and stone in 1936.
Modern Sisak was damaged in the 2nd World War and also in Homeland War.
Very first anti fascist unit in Europe is the Sisak partisan squad. Also the 1st squad of volunteers in Homeland war was founded in Sisak.
