A Cheaper Venice

Not being a worldwide hostel member upon my arrival in Venice Italy in the fall of '98 would turn out to be trivial. As a person who has tramped through Venice would know, maps are not entirely useful. Night was falling and I was trapped in the maze of narrow alleys between precisely dilapidated old villas looking for one of two hostels in Venice, Hostel Venezia.

Eventually, not to my request, I met up with a gentleman from Jersey that was heading there - how he knew where he was going was a mystery. As our luck would have it, we caught the very last water bus to the island where it was located. On arrival, I presented the right amount of lire to the hostel employee - however this was only for ONE night due to being a non-member. My exiting train ticket wasn't for two days.

So here it is, the tip for all you Venetian travelers. Hostel Venezia has a wonderful old & dusty attic in the rafters that you can monkey your way up into. Make friends, not foes, to sneak you in and you can have yourself a rather stiff hardwood bed. Of course, I would've been obliged to pay for my other night's stay in the attic- but I think it would have ruined the adventure of it.
