Cheap eats in Edinburgh

Save your cash and eat in Edinburgh
Being frugal when you're backpacking around the world is quite an important lesson to learn but it's probably one of the hardest. You're in a new place, there's lots to see and lots to do - sometimes it feels like too much. If you're somewhere like Thailand where everything is so much cheaper than back home it's great and you can walk about feeling like a millionaire. If, however, you're somewhere where the exchange rate isn't quite so in your favour, times get hard before you're even quite aware of it. Three cheers for the Guardian then, as it has set out three places in Edinburgh you can eat for less than £10 - not too bad for backpackers whose pockets aren't entirely bottomless.

The Spoon Cafe - the name of which belies its menu - boasts homemade ginger beer for £2.10, delicious sounding meals like the boudin noir with glazed carrots and potatoes at £6.95 and croissants stuffed with Ayrshire ham and Swiss cheese for £3.45.

Oink - possibly the best name for a restaurant I've ever heard - has, appropriately enough, a roasted hog in the window that's just waiting to be sliced and diced for a starving backpacker. A pork roll with crackling will set you back a minor £4.90.

Finally, Urban Angel - which the conscience-driven trekkers will be pleased to hear is committed to working with fair-trade, organic produce - offers things like mozzarella, tomato and basil sandwiches for £3.80 and eggs Benedict for £7.90. Party-prone backpackers should also be happy that brunch is served until 17:00 BST.

There are so many great places to eat in Edinburgh! It's best to stay clear of the main streets/touristy areas though if you are on a tight food budget!
