New York - the ultimate romantic getaway?

With less than a month to go until Valentine's Day, I expect the thoughts of all you lovebugs out there will be turning to how you're going to treat that special someone this time around. It seems no sooner have we got the panic of deciding on a gift for Christmas out of the way than the stores are filled with candy and flowers for February 14th.

But whatever your feelings about Cupid, St Valentine and the card companies, it represents the perfect opportunity to whisk your loved one away for a romantic break in one of the world's top cities.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive affair, with cheap hostels in Paris and London an ideal way to have fun while getting closer. My personal preference, however, would be for New York.

The Big Apple was recently confirmed as being the most popular destination for US travellers in 2009 and that came as no surprise to me - even though it's nearly 20 years since it last took the accolade. There's something for everyone in this great city and that's particularly the case next month, with those staying in cheap New York hostels able to take advantage of a range of activities targeted at romantics.

A horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park is surely a must, while Bateaux New York offers a luxurious cruise to get your heart racing. And fans of TV's Gossip Girl can even try something different by taking a special tour over Valentine's Day weekend, with visitors encouraged to turn up dressed as their favourite couple from the show!
