See them ski in New Zealand

New Zealand is known for many things, not least its attractiveness to backpacking enthusiasts and those looking to explore somewhere new. The landscapes of this epic country were made famous by the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films and tourism has undoubtedly been boosted as a result.

But one thing that may not immediately spring to mind when considering the land of the kiwi is skiing. You might be more likely to head to France or Austria to catch a glimpse of the slopes, but New Zealand's Southern Alps offer some snow as well.

I'm not much of a skier myself, but I do enjoy watching and would love to check out some of the training that will be taking place there this summer.

According to tourism bosses, teams from New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, Canada and other countries are training for the 2010 Winter Olympics on Mount Hutt. The athletes reach speeds of up to 120kph and those staying in hostels in the country will be able to watch them prepare and race.

Paul Marks, race and events manager at Mount Hutt ski-fields, said: "It's a privilege to host these world-class teams on our slopes and we'll be rewarded with some amazing ski racing. The speeds these athletes reach is unbelievable and incredible to watch."

And if you are planning a trip to New Zealand - or indeed anywhere in the world - now could be a great time to book a hostel. That's because Hostelworld.com has launched a major promotion, with those booking online being offered the chance to win a 'golden ticket" worth €1,000 (£864).

Beginning yesterday (July 27th) and running until August 5th, one winner will be randomly chosen for the prize each day.
