I stayed in Hostel Paz in downtown Madrid for about a week and a half. The elderly couple who owned the hostel were sweet, helpful and just wonderful. The place was always sparkling clean, I'm talking the lady waxed the floors, cleaned the tubs and washed the sheets on a daily basis. I was highly impressed. There was even a little patio on the floor I was on, though I think it was just that top floor that had one.

On that patio I had a great view of Madrid. The hostel itself was right in the heart of the city, a 5 minute walk from the metro and Plaza de Sol, the Opera and Palacio Real were no more than 15 minutes away. There were plenty of restaurants, dance clubs (yea salsa!), shops and museums close by. I'll never forget those nights in Madrid...though not eating anything until around 4 was difficult. BTW, Madrid is not the best place for vegetarians...
